RESILIENCE: een door de Europese Commissie gefinancierd project gericht op het verminderen van hartschade door kankerbehandelingen

Als gevolg van de kankerbehandeling lopen patiënten een hoog risico op complicaties aan het hart en vaatstelsel. Chemotherapie met anthracyclines is een uiterst effectieve behandeling tegen veel soorten kanker, maar ze kunnen schadelijk zijn voor het hart. Dit kan leiden tot chronisch hartfalen. 

RESILIENCE zal een nieuwe preventieve behandelingstechniek (ischemische pre-conditionering op afstand ofwel RIC) testen bij patiënten met een risico op deze door anthracycline-veroorzaakte schade aan het hart. Daarnaast zal een nieuwe afbeeldingstechniek (HMR) worden gebruikt om hartschade door antracyclines in een zeer vroeg stadium te ontdekken. RESILIENCE werkt met een multidisciplinair consortium met actieve deelname van patiënten.

Verminder het hartfalen bij het overleven van kanker

Dankzij de grote wetenschappelijke en medische vooruitgang zijn er steeds meer mensen die kanker overleven in Europa. Overlevenden van kanker lopen echter een hoog risico op complicaties in het hart. Onder hen is hartfalen bijzonder zorgwekkend. Er is een sterke behoefte om schadelijke gevolgen bij overlevenden van kanker te verminderen en hun kwaliteit van leven te verhogen.

Ischemische conditionering op afstand (RIC) is een behandeling waarbij de doorbloeding in een bepaald orgaan, bijvoorbeeld een arm, korte tijd onderbroken wordt om daarmee andere organen te beschermen tegen schade.

SAMENVATTING VAN HET KLINISCH ONDERZOEK

De Resilience studie is een internationale, prospectieve haalbaarheidsstudie, waarbij patiënten gedurende een bepaalde tijd gevolgd worden. Het gaat om een gerandomiseerd onderzoek met een controlegroep om de werkzaamheid en veiligheid te onderzoeken van ischemische pre-conditionering op afstand (RIC) bij patiënten met lymfoom die anthracyclines krijgen. Patiënten die 5 of meer chemotherapiekuren toegediend zullen krijgen, komen in aanmerking.

WAAROM LYMFOOM

De chemotherapiebehandeling voor lymfoom bevat anthracyclines. Deze behandeling kan in sommige gevallen onomkeerbare schade in het hart veroorzaken. Lymfoom treft zowel vrouwen als mannen, en het is dus ideaal om de verschillen in hartschade tussen mannen en vrouwen te bestuderen.
